In a little less than a week, the whole Miami Dolphins organization has been turn upside down. Whether you want to call it a hazing, bullying, extortion, racism or a being soft problem something doesn’t add up.
- On November 3rd Jonathan Martin left the team facility after being “bullied” by teammates and in particular, Richie Incognito. Later that day, Incognito was suspended from the team.
- Then it came out November 4th that Incognito was actually using racial slurs toward Martin. A voicemail released contained the following:
“Hey, wassup, you half n—– piece of s—. I saw you on Twitter, you been training 10 weeks. [I want to] s— in your f—ing mouth. [I’m going to] slap your f—ing mouth. [I’m going to] slap your real mother across the face [laughter]. F— you, you’re still a rookie. I’ll kill you.”
- Later in the week, details surfaced over a trip to Las Vegas where Martin was supposedly forced to pony up the funds of over $15,000 to go, even though he didn’t make the trip.
- Today, November 6th, teammates of both Incognito and Martin have overwhelmingly rallied to the aid of Incognito. Calling him a model teammate, and even the team’s starting quarterback, Ryan Tannehill, saying, “If you asked Jonathan Martin who his best friend is on this team two weeks ago, he’d say Richie Incognito.” and Brian Hartline, starting wide receiver, saying he is outraged because he says Martin was passing the voicemail around earlier in the year and laughing about it.
This whole thing doesn’t make sense on a variety of different fronts. First off, you can never use a racial slur towards anyone let alone a teammate, but if we take something from any of us and read it back now it might not make sense. You always have to have context of what was said. What stands out to me is how the whole team seems to be backing up Incognito and leaving Martin hanging out to dry. The team’s starting QB and leader is going to have a pulse on what happens with this team. One thing for sure, this story is far from being over. This story seems to have been written by M Night Shyamalan with how many twists and turns it has been taking. Now that his team has sided against him, Jonathan Martin has to come give his side of what has happened. Who knows what will come out then.
